As we age our skin naturally loses its plumpness as it doesn’t produce as much collagen. But this can be easily restored using rejuvenating dermal fillers that can boost volume, hydrate skin and give skin a smoothness, all of which can naturally enhance the shape of cheeks and lips, while softening lines, such as around the mouth.
This treatment offers a revolutionary approach to skin rejuvenation, which when administered by a dermatologist, can produce subtle, but transformative results that give you a fresher more youthful look.
How do fillers work?
Dermal fillers are used to give volume, and fill out areas of the face that are sagging or have lost their plumpness. They are also effective in smoothing lines and wrinkles.
At Twenty-five Harley Street clinic, the brand Restylane is used, which is one of the most popular dermal fillers used in the UK, both for its naturally enhancing effects and safety.
This is because Restylane is a sterile gel, made in a laboratory, and contains hyaluronic acid, a sugar that is naturally present in the skin. A doctor injects this into the skin to replenish the hyaluronic acid lost through ageing, hydrating the skin and improving its elasticity and tone. Hyaluronic acid has replaced older collagen based products as it has better results, that last longer, and fewer reactions, such as swelling, as reported in the journal of Plastic and Aesthetic Research.
This is a temporary filler, as hyaluronic acid is broken down within the skin over several months, and will eventually leave no trace of the filler.
What do fillers work best for?
At Twenty-Five Harley Street we specialise in the following:
Reshaping cheeks: This is carried out by skilful augmentation, so that hollow cheeks are given volume and lift, giving your face shape and definition.
Nasolabial folds: The more we use certain muscles in the face, especially those around the mouth, the more it results in unwelcome lines and wrinkles. Restylane can gently fill in nasolabial folds, which are the lines from the nose to the mouth, making them less pronounced.
Lip fillers: Lips that are dry or thin, can be plumped up and hydrated to look fuller and more shapely.
What’s involved in the procedure?
You won’t need an allergy skin test beforehand, as this is a product that doesn’t contain any extra additives.
Your doctor will either apply a topical skin anaesthetic 30-40 minutes before your injections, or if it’s your lips that are being treated, they may offer a dental block.
They will then inject tiny amounts of Restylane into specific points on the face or lips, using a micro-puncture technique. This is usually injected into the middle layer of the skin (dermis). Once injected, the gel distributes evenly in the skin.
You should feel fine to go about your usual day after the treatment. It is normal to experience a little redness, puffiness or mild swelling and an ice pack will help. This should disappear after a day or two.
What results can I expect?
You should notice improvements immediately after the treatment, but it usually takes a few days for the full effects to become apparent, as it settles into its final shape. Often 2-3 treatments are recommended, spaced a month apart, with maintenance treatments about every 4 to 6 months.
Lip enhancements usually work with a single treatment, and effects last up to 6 months.
